Succession Plan

HMBEC developed a succession plan for an established construction firm.  Training and milestone objectives were put into place to ensure that the firm would continue to prosper after management was transferred to the owner’s son.

Executive Director
Dr. Failautusi Avengalio

Dr. Failautusi ‘Tusi’ Avegalio was appointed as director of the Pacific Business Center Program in November 2000.  He has over 25 years of experience in teaching, managing and consulting in Hawaii and the Pacific Islands.  Dr. Avegalio taught at the Shidler College of Business, University of Hawaii at Manoa, from 1989 to 1992, before serving as president of American Samoa Community College from 1993 to 1997.  He then was appointed a research fellowship at the East-West Center in 1998, and returned to Shidler College as an adjunct professor in 1999.  Dr. Avegalio has taught courses in cross-cultural management, total quality management, and American management principles for the University of Portland, Hawaii Pacific University, and the Japan-America Institute for Management Sciences. He has served as executive director for the Consortium of Pacific Education, helping to further distance learning initiatives in the Pacific through information technology. He was also a teacher and administrator in the American Samoa public education system.  Dr. Avegalio holds a BS in Education and a BA in Social Sciences from Emporia State University in Kansas, an MA from Truman State University in Missouri, and a Doctorate in Educational Administration from Brigham Young University in Utah. He is a Polynesian Alii and holds the traditional title of Papalii from Savaii, Samoa.

Dana Hauanio

Dana Hauanio joined the Honolulu Minority Business Enterprise Center (HMBEC) as project director in May 2007.  Ms. Hauanio serves as advocate for the Honolulu minority business community, coordinates program initiatives, and works directly with clients.  Previously, Ms. Hauanio served as the manager and senior loan officer at the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, overseeing funds of $28 million in the Consumer Micro-Loan Program and the Native Hawaiian Revolving Loan Fund.  She also served as assistant vice president and business banking underwriter for Bay View Capital Corporation in California, and as a small business banking representative for Bank of Hawaii.  Ms. Hauanio holds a BBA in Business Administration from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and an MBA from Hawaii Pacific University.  She is a graduate of Pearl City High School.  Ms. Hauanio serves as board member of Hale Kuai, a cooperative that encourages Native Hawaiian craftsmanship and entrepreneurship; she also serves on the Council of Hawaiian Representatives for the Native Hawaiian Hospitality Association, and is secretary of the Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce.
Senior Business Development Manager
David Gillespie
David M. Gillespie has transitioned to Senior Business Devolopment Manager after serving as Interim Director.  His primary responsibility is to facilitate and create opportunities for business development by linking University of Hawaii resources and technical expertise with individuals starting up or expanding businesses.  Mr. Gillespie has taught business courses at various Hawaii colleges, held senior fiscal management positions at some of Hawaii's leading companies, and served as business consultant and entrepreneur.  Mr. Gillespie holds an MBA from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Business Development Manager
Ryan Kanda

Ryan Kanda joined the Honolulu Minority Business Enterprise Center (HMBEC) as Business Development Manager in May 2007.  Previously, Mr. Kanda served as a Contracting Officer with the Department of the Navy, and performed a rotation with the Small Business Administration.  He works with clients in all aspects of business and technical assistance, specializing in Federal government procurement and Small Business certification.  He has taught conversational English in Chiba, Japan, with the JET Program.  Mr. Kanda holds a BA in English Literature from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and an MBA in Japan-focused Business from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and the Japan-American Institute for Management Sciences.
Fiscal Administrative Facilitator
Sonia Johnston

Sonia Johnston joined the Honolulu Minority Business Enterprise Center (HMBEC) as Fiscal Administrative Facilitator in July 2010.  Previously, Ms. Johnston served as Program Manager for a Native American Community Development Corporaton in Fountain Valley, CA, as well as in administrative roles in the health care, human resources and insurance fields.  Ms. Johnston holds a BA from California State University, Long Beach.
